When I first seen this picture, my initial thought was had it started raining between this picture and the last, you know how some of us like to tick of the logical explanation first, but very quickly I remembered the scorching sun-shine that accompanied this picture.
My imagination ran wild as potential and possibilities of spirit and life force and fairies and the spiritual Earth merging with the physical Earth and heaven on Earth being born in this very moment. A friend offered me another perspective and I found it incredibly interesting so I thought I'd share it with you.

We joined Scotland Against Monsanto in Glasgow to find out why so many people are taking to the streets to voice their dissent against Monsanto. You probably won't hear about this on the news, so make sure to inform yourself.

What we heard in Glasgow that day was real voices, not affiliated with any political party not owned by any corporations and transcending boundaries of age, gender, sexuality and race. Why they were there, well as Lynn Bunny Paws tells us so succinctly at 19 minutes "If you eat food, it affects you...it effects every single person on this planet."

And so its time for the Dan Brown machine to once again save the publishing world from certain hell and damnation by the release of his new Robert Langdon based novel INFERNO, funnily enough with hell and damnation being the central core theme this time round, as the genius of Dante and his Devine Comedy being the coded stanzas that Langdon must find symbolic meaning and hidden clues within, all whilst battling amnesia, dodging hired killers, tackling friendly (and of course a once child protégé), not to mention perfectly proportioned doctors, who turn out to be on the side of good, then bad, then good, then….oh look, you'll just have to grab a copy and figure it out for yourself.
Its unmistakably a Dan Brown tome, from the now usual page at the front declaring FACT - and then telling us that he's been a clever Mr Brown by using real artwork and real literature and really believable plot devices for his breathless (again) page turner. Ok, so the believable plot devices bit isn't a claimed fact to be fair, but hey, lets be honest, there totally could be high tech billion dollar yachts cruising the Med staffed by very rich and very stupid 'soldiers of fortune' as they plan a plague on all our houses. Sure there could.
Its into this maelstrom of media hype, frenzy, critical napalming and spotlight of public intrigue (Fiat Lux) that for the fourth time I have, like a masochistic moth dancing over the hot glass of a bulb, once again decided to try and make some sense of it all and produce a guide book to a novel. INTO THE INFERNO is an apt title for the guide after what has been a baptism in the flames of several hell's over the past (and first) week of the putting together of my guide. Everything that could go wrong or get in the way or just plain bad luck happened. Twice. No boring details I promise, suffice it to comment that its been seven days of realising that even after 8 books and ten years in the business, it still has the capacity to leave you scratching your head in numb astonishment and disbelief that the 21st century is still three centuries away for much of the publishing industry.
In some cased, quill and ink are yet to be phased out for the new fangled pens and pencils. So bottom line, several days lost but invaluable lessons learned and this week should see everything back on track as my local corner shop sells more jars of instant coffee, Haribo Golden Bears candy, chewing gum, and my newly found favourite snack which is a Polish import of rather addictive chocolate covered heart shaped soft ginger biscuits with a hidden gem of jam like stuff in the middle. If I could pronounce them I'd give them a plug here, but it may take a few more blogs before I can get it right. Needless to say, all intended plans to eat healthy and keep to a strict regime of food and exercise has been replaced by lots of 'sleep is for the week' affirmations, and a work desk littered with the aftermath of what resembles a Morgan Spurlock documentary on eating only things that are really bad for you for a whole month.
I downloaded my iBooks version of INFERNO on the morning of the 14th. Then also bizarrely went and purchased a hardback copy from my local emporium of literary delights later in the day. 10 hours later I'd read the long awaited thriller and though its in my opinion, not as interesting as Da Vinci Code, I think this one is going to be a slow burner and start to ignite some fires along the way as people begin to digest its nuances and the little digs at Catholicism that are now de rigour for Mr Dan. That elderly nun who taught religious ed at his school must have really made a big impact on young Dans life :-)
More later. But for now, I need to go and stock up on bags of thingies that I can't spell but can eat by the bucket load.
We are getting ready to go on an adventure here at the Enlightening Times and we hope you'll join us. As Dan Brown's new novel "Inferno" hits the shops in less than T-2 hours, I'm wondering if intrepid adventurers and shadow historians Ashley Cowie and Simon Cox are already in a queue somewhere in Bradford and Glasgow making sure they are one of the first to get their copies so they can dive right in and begin to work their magic.

International TV Star & Author Ashley Cowie
Ashley Cowie is a Scottish author, archaeological explorer, lecturer and TV host on an international stage. Born and raised in a small fishing village on the north coast of Scotland Ashley established and ran the UK's first seafood trading company supplying only fish caught from sustainable stocks. His family proudly own and run the UK’s Seafood Restaurant of the Year. In his late 20’s Ashley sold his seafood businesses and began the full time study of a broad range of historic subjects, becoming an authority on pre-historic symbols, metrology and archaeostronomy. Since 2002 he has delivered highly visual presentations on the International Science Festival circuit and was elected into the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (founded in 1780 by Royal Charter).

The Rope Age
Skara Brae on the North coast of Mainland Orkney is, at the time of writing, the oldest Neolithic settlement in Europe. Professor Gordon Childe of Glasgow University excavated the site in the 1930's and secured the buildings. Many of the artifacts he recovered: shards of pottery, carved stones and bones and items of jeweler, depict similar symbols. Comparing these artefacts and symbols to similar examples found in contemporary cultures around the world, a fresh interpretation of the items recovered from Skara Brae can be established - relating to cordage production crafts. This lecture offers a voyage into the cordage skills and survival crafts of the ancient inhabitants.
Egyptian rope crafts and the evolution of Geometry
Every year after the Nile receded, for taxation purposes, Egyptian surveyor’s re-measured lands with simple wooden tools, ropes and pegs. Greek Geometers later translated these rope crafts onto clay tablets and the eggs of geometry were hatched. Greek geometry and astronomy are discussed highlighting the influence of Greece in the development of western sciences and symbols.
Navigators of the North
Myths, symbols, rituals and folk traditions often encapsulate elements of astronomy, navigation and place determination sciences. This highly visual lecture highlights the role of the cycles of planet Venus, in the development of time keeping, and within the symbols, rituals and myths of the Celtic and Norse nations.
How to read a Church
Churches, and their architectural features, were used as vessels to deliver content. Rosslyn Chapel was founded in 1446 as a collegiate church - cruciform in shape. Building works ceased in 1484 and the structure remains incomplete. However, establishing the governing geometry, the building module and the foundational measurements applied by the designers, a ground plan for the original building can be completed.
Modern Minds and Ancient Symbols
Many of the most famous modern buildings and monuments display ancient symbols – but why? Analyzing the ancient symbols and influences in these structures takes us closer to the minds of the architects and their original meaning. Has the American constitution been founded on Masonic principles? Does the Dollar Bill hide Masonic symbols? What does the layout of Washington’s streets and buildings tell us about the esoteric principles of its designers?
Ritual Vs Survival
During the second excavation at Skara Brae, a number of the artifacts recovered were categorized as 'probably for ritual or ceremonial purposes'. Among these items: a curious T-shaped stone device and a number of carefully shaped stone balls. To establish if these items were actually ‘ritual or ceremonial’, we must first consider all their potential practical uses, in day to day activities. This analysis reveals that all of the items can be used in the preparation of materials and tools for building and survival.
Rise of the Neolithic Farmers
Around 5000 BCE settlers in Scotland began establishing farms, fishing stations and immense stone monuments - which are now generally associated to ancestor worship. Although human remains have been recovered from these structures, many have astronomical significance and have been aligned to local geographical features. Using The Ring of Brodgar, The Stennes circle and Maes Howe burial chamber as working examples, what do the alignments and measurements found in these monuments tell us about the skills and knowledge of the builders?
Megalithic Meridians
Over the last 7000 years, Scotland's landscapes have hosted a series of meridians (arbitrary north-south alignments). The practical use of meridians in measuring land, building and astronomy are explored and the observation stations located upon them, in each of the 7 millennia are revealed and studied.

Marianne and three volunteers had traveled up on the train from Arnside to raise awareness of Radioactive Particles being found on Cumbrian Beaches. You can read Mariannes blog here
MB: It's the twenty seventh anniversary of Chernobyl. To mark that anniversary we have come to St Bees. We have chosen St Bees because there was radioactive particles found last year on this bit of coastline and it seems to be going up every year, the amount that's being found. It started off there was a few particles found first of all. I don't think it was at Seascale either, it was somewhere else they found them. Then it was the Environment Agency told Sellafield to do the monitoring of the coastline and have chosen a few select beaches, and all of those beaches have been found to contain (radioactive) particles.
They've got this Argo Cat that goes up and down the beach. I think its over a thousand radioactive particles that's been found over the last year. We are not just talking about naturally occurring radioactive elements, we're talking about stuff that's coming from reprocessing elements like plutonium, cesium and americium.
ET: Things that you normally wouldn't expect to find in the Sea?
MB: Things that shouldn't be in the Sea. There is an international Convention called the OSPAR Convention our government signed up to. This convention says that radioactive waste should not be dumped at Sea. I think it's because they don't class it as radioactive waste, they class it as something else and so that means that those emissions are continually being pumped out to sea from the reprocessing operations at Sellafield.
The thing is with reprocessing it is just a way of separating the plutonium and other elements out of the spent fuel, supposedly so that the fuel that's made, the Moxx Fuel, that's burnt in these high burn reactors. Nobody wants the Moxx fuel though because its so dangerous. The Japanese has to be bribed to actually take it. They were bribed so they were the only customer and yet still Sellafield is reprocessing and is on a crash program now of reprocessing which is why there are more and more radioactive particles being found on the beaches.
The particles come in, this Argo Cat goes out with the specialist equipment and picks up the particles, the next day there's more particles on the beach. So it's a case of them coming in with every tide and unless they stop reprocessing at Sellafield that's going to continue to accumulate and it's really dangerous to your health. You can inhale these particles and on the skin it can cause ulcerations.
The health protection agency is actually giving out advice to a beach in Scotland where there's been RADIUM found which is from luminous diodes from the 1950's. Radium you can't actually measure as a health effect with people, it can't be measured. But the stuff we are talking about on our beaches in Cumbria can be measured. It's measurable as an impact on human health. The health protection agency in Scotland has actually advised people not to take things off the beach and warned people about the radioactive particles. Not to spend too much time on the beach, not to dig on the beach... Whereas in Cumbria we have people like the Wildlife trust encouraging people to come to St Bees and do sand sculptures. And yet nothing is being said! It's almost like a conspiracy of silence.
ET: So say nothing?
What would you like to see happen?
MB: For reprocessing to be stopped immediately, and for Sellafield and our Government to put all its effort and expertise into looking after the waste safely on site. When people see that Sellafield is being decommissioned they think that sounds fantastic, Sellafield is being decommissioned, what that means is all the waste is going out. It's being decommissioned into the Environment, so it's all going out everywhere else. It's absolute madness. It's like one big experiment we are all taking part in.
ET: So then it's a global phenomenon not just local.
MB: Yes. There's stuff from Sellafield's reprocessing been found in India and the Norweigans are up in arms about it because obviously they are a nation that relies on its fishing!
ET: So really its going through our food chain as food we are all putting on our tables, eating and purchasing!
MB: I mean the Sea would never be given the chance to recover if this continues and the worst case scenario is that it becomes a tipping point, when there is no chance of recovery at all.
ET: What can people do?
MB: Well, people can object to their local Mp's. They can say that this reprocessing program at Sellafield should be stopped, and no way should there be any more new Moxx plants built at Sellafield. There shouldn't be any new builds.
They should just say this is an experiment that has failed. The whole thing should be kept onsite you know. Thats what's happening at Chernobyl, they are having to rebuild the sarcophagus just to make it safer! Thats what we should do at Sellafield. We should build a huge sarcophagus around it and actually contain the whole lot onsite. then put all the effort and expertise into looking after it and making sure that everything is contained as safely as possible, rather than just producing more and more of the stuff.
We just traveled up the railway from Arnside and that's the route that radioactive waste takes up all along the coast to Sellafield. Passing Schools, houses, hospitals, and more is arriving. It can't contain the waste it's already got! And part of this reprocessing actually disperses waste into the environment. Reprocessing reduces the volume but it mwans that what you're left with is concentrated, being reduced in volume by pushing it out to Sea.
ET: What do you think about the decision to take responsibility of waste from other places, and what do you think the motives are behind that?
MB: Well the whole reason we have the world's waste here in the first place is because we said that they would be having the waste back again once it had been reprocessed. All these countries would have theirs back. But obviously no one wants the waste. I suspect it in the billions to have the waste here from other countries but however many billions it is not worth sacrificiing the health of future generations. Not just in Cumbria but in Ireland and Norway, the Isle of Man. Its a huge area that's being affected. There's lots of people have stopped and talked to us today and have said they are completely in favour of what we are doing. We have found that everywhere along the coast. There's people obviously who work at Sellafield that maybe talk about the jobs issue but its a complete red herring because the jobs are going to be there to look after it.

The future of Libraries is considered with some pictures of the local Boot Library, also a section on dangerous books and books for burning!
